Corpus Studios

Pilates - Special Needs

We have a diverse clientele group, from serious athletes and those in rehabilitation and the elderly. Even within this group, we find that most people benefit from practicing one or more of the disciplines we offer, whether that means improving muscle strength to rehabilitate from or prevent injury in daily life, to lose weight, or to generally get in better shape. We work with people with issues including normal wear and tear from ageing, scoliosis, osteoporisis/osteopinia, hernia, arthorosis: hip/knee replacement, frozen shoulder, cardiovascular, and asthma, among others.

If you have had a serious injury or illness that places limits on your physical capabilities, be sure to inform us before you take your first class. In this case, it is often best to begin your Corpus journey with a couple of private one-on-one sessions with one of our instructors. This way, you can practice in a safe range of motion for your body, and exercises can be tailored to the best possible form for your specific needs. Your instructor may also be able to teach you modifications that will help you follow collective classes safely. You should always receive clearance from your doctor to exercise after any injury.

Back Issues

Back issues

At Corpus Studios we openly welcome our clients with unresolved back issues. We aim to increase strength and flexibility around the pelvis, upper legs, entire back and upper body. Our goal is to increase your potential to move efficiently toward a better functioning daily life.

Back sufferers frequently have some limited movement, aches and pains here and there, postural deviations, which may affect their ability to walk and move efficiently. Medications for several reasons e.g. pain management and inflammation may also need to be considered. At Corpus Studios our professors will look at your body as a whole, rather then isolate your back. Often back issues are beyond just the back and stem from unresolved postural problems. That being said, we also recognize, that once a back problem is alive and painful, you need to do everything to remove the pain, and return to a functioning daily life.

For all these reasons and more, Corpus Studios is here to help. We pride ourselves on our ability to help back sufferers move better and enjoy life more fully. With a wide variety of private, semi-private, group apparatus, collective mat-based sessions and specialized courses, we can meet your needs.

We have back sufferers who enjoy to come alone and work individually with an instructor and others who do semi-private classes with their partners and or friends. Some individuals enjoy a more community based Group Apparatus class and or Collective Mat-based classes.

Getting Started

Pilates and GYROTONIC® are an excellent starting place with their inherent flexibility and strengthening qualities. Back, shoulder, hip, knee issues, and pain, are just a few examples which can be greatly improved through a disciplined routine.

CoreAlign™ is perfect for those looking for upright posture and improved walking: if knee issues exist, caution should be used.

Bodhi Suspension System is very strengthening and challenges especially the upright posture: if upper limb issues exist, caution should be used.

Back pain sufferers looking to begin at Corpus Studios (as a solo or as a couple - partners or friends) are advised to start with the Initiation Package. Although private classes are more expensive, it is highly recommended to stick with privates for a period, if injuries or postural problems are severe and need several modifications. Depending on what your professor advises, you may be able to enter into group or collective within a short time.

With the Initiation Package you have:

  • 2x private sessions each of one hour. During these two sessions your instructor will
    • Get you started with basic choreography, and coordinated breath
    • Instruct efficient body positioning: including how to use your back correctly for protection during exercise
    • Encourage you to understand efficient dynamic posture, and guide you toward awareness when exercising and in living daily life
    • Instruct you individually, thus insuring more attention to your needs and the option to ask personalised questions

  • 1x Group Apparatus Class:
    • 4 to 6 people, moving together, use large apparatus to increase bone density as well as muscle strength and flexibility.
    • Large apparatus may include individually, or in combination, the Pilates Reformer, Tower & Chair, GYROTONIC® Tower and CoreAlign™.
    • Large group apparatus offer increased proprioceptive control and guidance via pulleys, springs, moving or stable platforms, harnesses, and loops, to hold in the hands, around the shoulders or connect through the ankles or feet
    • Offers more attention from the instructor with fewer people in the session

  • 1x Collective Mat-Based Class
    • 8-12 people using small apparatus (exception: The CoreAlign™ and Bodhi® are included in Collective classes)
    • Has more people, thus less personal guidance and attention of the instructor
    • Great for people who prefer a community like class and work well autonomously.

  • Annual Membership
    • Corpus Studios are a member-based community. We permit new clients to visit once without a membership. All following sessions require a membership.
    • We maintain a high standard of quality and can better service our existing cliental with limited drop-ins.
    • Membership helps overall funding of studio insurance and its members, receptionists, and the online reservation system.
    • Is required annually and may be purchased online or at reception
    • Without membership, reservation is not permitted online or at the studio. One must always first purchase membership, check out and then re-enter the online system to further make any purchase of classes.
    • Your membership is included in the Initiation package.

Personal insurance is also required

  2. Previous experience: even with previous experience, we suggest no higher than a Beginner level (B) requiring one year’s experience, unless otherwise instructed by a Corpus Studios professor.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen Shoulder and other Shoulder Issues

At Corpus Studios we openly welcome our clients with unresolved shoulder issues. We aim to increase strength and flexibility around the upper back and arms, neck, and chest. Our goal is to increase your potential to move efficiently toward a better functioning daily life.

Shoulder sufferers frequently have some limited movement, aches and pains here and there, postural deviations, which may affect their ability to live and move efficiently. Medications for several reasons e.g. pain management and inflammation may also need to be considered. At Corpus Studios our professors will look at your body as a whole, rather than isolate your problem areas. Often shoulder issues are more than just the shoulders and stem from unresolved postural problems. That being said, we also recognize, that once a shoulder problem is alive and painful, you need to do everything to remove the pain, and return to a functioning daily life.

For all these reasons and more, Corpus Studios is here to help. We pride ourselves on our ability to help you move better and enjoy life more fully. With a wide variety of private, semi-private, group apparatus, collective mat-based sessions and specialized courses, and a medical massage therapist we can meet your needs.
